A Steinert Overbelt Magnet, a Pre-Thanksgiving Emergency, and the Cost of an Incomplete Quote

The Tuesday Call

It was the Tuesday before Thanksgiving in 2024. I was in my truck, already rerouting through traffic, when Hamilton called. He runs a 120-ton-per-hour scrap processing line in Ohio. The overbelt magnet had just dropped a section of shredded steel onto the sort belt. Not a little spill. The whole magnet had stopped lifting.

  • What is the cost of being wrong?

It included the magnet, mounting hardware, freight, a spare drive bearing, and a day of commissioning with one of their application engineers.

The Steinert quote also had a section called “Not Included.” That was the part that made it easier to accept.

“Not included” was foundation steel, crane service, electrical disconnect upgrades, and a material-testing window if the plant wanted to run sample batches after installation. It listed all of that before we signed. The rebuilder's quote didn't mention any of it.

I've learned to ask “what's NOT included” before “what's the price.” The vendor who lists all fees upfront—even if the total looks higher—usually costs less in the end.

Why did I trust the higher quote? Because Anja, one of Steinert's applications engineers, was honest about the magnet's limits.

“No one can guarantee 100% recovery,” she said. “If we tell you that, don't sign it. The magnet will pull what it's sized to pull, and it will reject what it's designed to reject. That's all we can honestly commit to.”

The Day Everything Went Off the Written Plan

Eddie arrived at 2 a.m. Wednesday. By 8 a.m., the old magnet was off the frame. At 11, he found a cracked pulley bearing on the drive shaft. It wasn't in any of the inspection notes. It would have let go within a week, probably during a full-speed run.

The 8 a.m. Test

At 7:58 a.m. on Thursday, the inspector watched a test batch pass under the rebuilt magnet at full belt speed. The ferrous metal cleaned the surface. The non-ferrous stream stayed clear. The shipment went out that afternoon.

Total cost: $14,950. That was about $750 above the Steinert quote. The extra was the material-testing window. The rebuilder's quote was $4,100. If we had taken it, the missing crane, the larger disconnect, the spare bearing, and the extra labor would have added roughly $6,800. The real cost would have been the six-month contract we would have lost when the audit failed.

Lessons I Keep Relearning

There is an old line about the difference between a hawk and a handsaw. I used to think it was just a bit of strange English. After this job, I get it: the two can look similar when you're in a hurry, but if you grab the wrong one, you'll find out fast.

  1. Ask “what's NOT included” before “what's the price.”
  2. If a vendor guarantees 100% recovery, ask them to put that in writing and watch them hesitate.
  3. Time certainty is worth money. The value of guaranteed turnaround isn't speed—it's knowing you can plan around it.
  4. An honest quote usually looks higher because it includes the real work.

This was accurate as of November 2024. Freight rates, equipment lead times, and even environmental marketing rules change, so verify current pricing before you budget.
