Why I Stopped Looking for 'One-Stop' Suppliers and Found a Magnet Expert Instead

The Setup: A New Recovery Line, a Tight Deadline

Back in March 2022, I was handed the lead on a new non-ferrous metal recovery line for our recycling facility. The specs called for a high-capacity eddy current separator and a magnetic drum pre-separator. Budget was set at €180,000. Timeline: eight weeks to commissioning.

I’d been in procurement for about four years at that point—enough to feel confident, not enough to know what I didn’t know. My instinct was to find a single supplier who could deliver both units, handle installation, and maybe throw in a spare parts package. One contact, one PO, one headache to manage. That seemed efficient.

The Trap: The 'Everything' Vendor

A mid-sized European equipment supplier quoted me €165,000 for the whole package. Their sales rep was smooth. ‘We handle everything—magnets, screens, conveyors, controls. One warranty, one service team.’ Sounded perfect. I signed.

The first sign of trouble came during factory acceptance testing. The eddy current rotor was underpowered—rated for 2,500 Gauss instead of the 3,200 our feed material required. The magnetic drum had a different pole pitch than specified. The vendor assured me ‘it would work fine in practice.’ (Spoiler: it didn’t.)

I should’ve stopped there. But we were already six weeks in, with penalties looming. I approved shipment.

The Crash: When 'Fine' Cost €12,000

Commissioning week was a disaster. The magnetic drum failed to separate fine iron from the stream—contamination levels hit 8% instead of the required 1%. The eddy current ejected too much middlings, wasting recoverable material.

I brought in an independent consultant. His report: ‘The separator is mis-specified for your feed size distribution. The Result: A System That Worked

We ordered a Steinert MTEH eddy current separator and a HGF magnetic drum. Installed them in July 2022. The first batch analysis showed iron contamination under 0.5%, non-ferrous recovery rate over 97%. Payback on the additional investment (the €58,000 replacement plus €12,000 wasted) came in under 14 months.

The Lesson: Professional Boundaries Are a Feature, Not a Bug

Honestly, the most valuable thing I learned wasn’t about magnets. It was about vendor selection. A supplier who says ‘this isn’t our strength—here’s who does it better’ earns my trust for everything they do claim to handle. The vendor who promised everything delivered nothing reliable.

Steinert doesn’t build conveyors. They don’t design screens. They focus on magnetic and sensor-based separation, and they’ve been doing it for over 150 years. That kind of depth matters when your recovery line’s profitability depends on a few percentage points of purity.

Now I keep a checklist: What does this vendor specialize in? What do they explicitly avoid? If the answer to the second question is ‘nothing,’ I walk.
