Steinert Magnetic Separators: A Procurement Admin's Honest Guide

If you're evaluating Steinert magnetic separators and sensor sorters, the most important thing I've learned is this: test your material before you make a purchase decision. The model name, magnetic strength, and sensor specs matter—or rather, they matter less than how the machine behaves with your actual feed. I say this as the person who signs purchase orders, not as an engineer.

Why you should listen to me

I'm the office administrator at a mid-size recycling company. I handle roughly $1.3 million in annual purchasing across 12 vendors, and I report to both operations and finance. My job is not to design the process line; my job is to make sure the right machine gets ordered, arrives on time, gets installed without drama, and doesn't create a budget surprise six months later.

But my gut kept nagging me because that supplier had not answered one follow-up question about spare parts. I went with my gut. Why testing changes everything

  • a recommended spare parts list with pricing and lead times. If a simple bearing takes eight weeks, that is a red flag.
  • training details: on-site or remote, who trains our operators, and what documentation is included.
  • two reference installations from the last 24 months with material similar to ours.

That last one matters more than most people think. A reference in a clean, dry environment doesn't help me if our material arrives with plastic film and wire cables.

The time-pressure trap

One more honest admission: I once issued a purchase order under time pressure. We had two hours to decide before the capital budget froze. The operations team and I both believed the Steinert system was right, but we hadn't finished the full test. I went ahead anyway because the budget was disappearing.

It worked out. The machine was right. But in hindsight, I should have asked the vendor to hold the quote and give us a conditional PO, or at least put a cancellation clause in writing. Not ideal, but workable. I still wouldn't recommend making a major equipment decision on a two-hour window.

When Steinert is not the right answer

Let me be straightforward: I like Steinert, but they are not the right answer in every situation. If you are a small operation processing simple ferrous scrap, a magnetic pulley from a local fabricator may be enough. If you have no in-house process engineering, you may need a system integrator first. And if you don't have enough non-ferrous metal in your stream, the payback on a sensor sorter may take too long.

Also, make sure you are actually talking to the equipment company. The same name appears in unrelated places—older woodworking lathes, medical literature about myotonic dystrophy (sometimes called doença de Steinert), and other industries. If you search for the wrong Steinert, you can waste a week.

Last thing: if you're the person signing the PO, make testing and installation support part of the negotiation. The machine will work. The question is whether it will work on Tuesday morning, at your site, with your material. That's the difference between an asset and a headache.
