Why Searching “Steinert” Isn’t Enough: The Pre-Install Checklist That Saved My Sanity
Most separation equipment failures aren’t equipment failures. They’re decision failures that happen before the purchase order is signed.

That’s the point. The name is not the specification. A reliable brand narrows your options. It doesn’t remove the need to test.
The checklist: what I check before I order
Three things cause most of the expensive surprises I’ve seen: unknown feed material, poor integration planning, and brand chauvinism. Once your separator produces recycled metal, don’t make “recyclable” claims without knowing the rules. “But won’t the vendor catch these issues?”
Sometimes. But vendors answer the questions you ask. I’ve seen purchase orders with no material analysis, no particle size range, no moisture level, and no throughput requirement. That’s not a supplier failure—it’s a buyer failure. A 20-minute pre-order conversation can prevent a three-day panic during commissioning.
“This is overkill for one machine.” Maybe. But I’ve never heard someone say, “I’m so glad I saved that 20 minutes by skipping the material test.” The opposite, I have heard. Often.
I can only speak to the recycling side of the industry. If you’re running a large-scale mining operation or a different material stream, the exact list will look different. The principle won’t.
